Flight Crew & Load Planner - Label Specifications

Label specifications help packaging handlers easily identify the type of hazard, especially in emergency situations. The following requirements apply to the application of labels on dangerous goods packages:

  • All labels must be securely affixed or printed on packaging so that they are readily visible and legible. They must not be obscured by any part of the packaging or by any other label or marking.
  • Labels must be located on the same side of the package and near the proper shipping name if the package dimensions are adequate.
  • Labels should be affixed next to the shipper's or consignee's address. The full name and address of the shipper or consignee must be provided and should be located near the proper shipping name.
  • The material, printing, and any adhesive on all labels must be sufficiently durable to withstand normal transport conditions, such as different types of weather, without losing their effectiveness.
  • All labels must also conform to the shape, color, format, symbols, and text specified in the DGR, unless otherwise indicated.
  • Subsidiary hazard labels, if required, must be affixed next to the primary hazard label.
  • If a CAO label is required, it must be affixed on the same surface and near the hazard label.
  • If a package orientation "This Way Up" label is required, at least two labels must be used. One label must be affixed to each of two opposite sides of the package with the arrows pointing in the correct direction.
  • If the net quantity or gross weight of the dangerous good is required, it must be indicated adjacent to the proper shipping name.
