Flight Crew & Load Planner - Radioactive Material
Very small quantities of radioactive material are permitted in excepted packages. The quantities are small enough that their potential hazards are deemed insignificant. The radiation level in an excepted package cannot exceed 5 µSv/h. A radiation dose at that level would not be significant and it would not damage any sensitive photographic materials.
Excepted packages of radioactive materials are exempt from the provisions relating to the categorization of packages, packing, labeling, marking, and other requirements for other quantities of radioactive material. However, they are required to meet the provisions related to the marking of gross mass overpacks, retention of documentation, inspection and decontamination requirements, and the reporting of dangerous goods accidents, incidents, and occurrences, and so forth. (For a more exhaustive list of the required provisions for excepted packages of radioactive materials, see Section 10.5.8 of the 59th edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.) All excepted packages of radioactive material must have a Radioactive Material, Excepted Package label.
Note that the adoption of IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 has given rise to extensive changes in the provisions for radioactive materials. These changes include new requirements for uranium hexafluoride in excepted packages and revisions to the provisions for radioactive materials, excepted packages, and fissile excepted material. For more information, consult Section 10 of the 59th edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
