Flight Crew & Load Planner - Securing Dangerous Goods

Operators are responsible for protecting packages from movement that could cause accidental damage. Packages must be secured in the aircraft and handled appropriately during loading and unloading. During normal conditions of transport, unsecured cargo can move up and down, forward and aft, and left and right. It is important to account for all dimensions of movement when securing dangerous goods.

Securing dangerous goods can be accomplished through various methods depending on the conditions, resources, and State or operator requirements. One method of securing packages is by using accompanying cargo, baggage, or ballasts to protect dangerous goods from shifting or moving during flight by packing them together. If other cargo is used as a means of securing dangerous goods, segregation of incompatible goods must be taken into consideration.

Another means of securing dangerous goods is through the use of nets, ropes, or tie-down straps that are secured to the aircraft floor or unit load device. When using ropes or tie-down straps, you must ensure that the excessive force of tightened straps does not compromise the structure of the package.
