Dangerous Goods Carried by Passengers or Crew
Dangerous goods must not be carried by passengers or crew as checked baggage, as carry-on baggage, or on their person, except as listed in DGR 2.3 and shown in Table 2.3.A. Some dangerous goods are permitted in controlled quantities and may be restricted to baggage or carry-on items.
For example, these common dangerous goods items may be carried in the cabin by passengers and crew:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Non-radioactive medicinal and toiletry articles, including aerosols
- Safety matches or a cigarette lighter (on one's person only)
Additionally, some dangerous goods are permitted in limited quantities in checked or carry-on baggage, but they require the operator's approval. For example, small quantities of ammunition may be packed in checked baggage with operator's approval. Similarly, small quantities of dry ice are permitted in checked or carry-on baggage with operator's approval. Some items, such as mercury thermometers carried by a representative of an official agency and oxygen cylinders when required for medical use, require that the pilot-in-command be informed of the location of these items.
