Class 6

Class 6 - Toxic and infectious substances is divided into toxic substances, such as mercury, and infectious substances, such as viruses and bacteria.

6.1 - Toxic substances are substances that are liable to cause harm, injury, or death through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. This includes non-infectious toxins from plants, animals, or bacterial sources. Examples are arsenic, nicotine, and cyanide.

6.2 - Infectious substances are those that are known or are reasonably expected to contain pathogens. Pathogens are micro-organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, and other agents, such as prions, that can cause disease in humans or animals. This division includes viruses and bacteria, such as HIV and rabies, as well as diagnostic specimens, biological products, and medical waste.
