UN Specification Markings

Packaging specification markings are those that identify the design or specification of a packaging, regardless of its use for a particular shipment. Packages that require UN specification markings are subject to performance tests to ensure that the package is properly designed to adequately contain its contents under normal conditions of transport. The type and severity of the performance tests are dependent on the degree of danger of the intended contents.

These markings are usually applied by the manufacturer or the authorized testing institute but are ultimately the responsibility of the shipper.

All single packaging and all outer packaging, including composite and combination packaging, that meet UN specifications must bear durable, legible, and appropriately sized and placed markings. Inner packagings are not required to be marked. Handwritten markings are not acceptable. Instead, the markings must be printed or embossed directly on the packaging.

The UN specification packaging marking must consist of the following:

  1. The United Nations packaging symbol
  2. The code number designating the types of packaging (1D is the code for a plywood drum)
  3. The letter X, Y, or Z designating that the design type for the associated packing group has been successfully tested
  4. A number indicating the relative density (for liquids) or the maximum gross weight (for solids and inner packagings)
  5. A number indicating the hydraulic test pressure, shown in kPa, for liquids, or the letter "S" for solids and inner packagings
  6. The last two digits of the year in which the packaging was manufactured
  7. International Vehicle Registration Code (VRI), indicating the State authorizing the mark
  8. Manufacturer's identifying mark
