Checking Packaging

Freight forwarders and dangerous goods acceptance personnel should check packaging to ensure that packing requirements have been met.

First, refer to the List of Dangerous Goods and check for the following information:

  • The proper shipping name and UN/ID number
  • The packing group
  • Whether the article or substance is permitted on passenger or cargo aircraft or cargo aircraft only
  • The packing instruction number
  • The maximum net quantity or maximum gross mass for each package
  • Any special provisions

Next, locate and read the applicable packing instruction. Ensure that the packaging meets all the requirements of the packing instruction. Then, locate and read the specification marking on the package to ensure that the packing group requirements and limits are not exceeded.

Dangerous goods packages are not normally opened by the cargo agent or customs to check compliance because the shipper is responsible for compliance. In addition, opening the package could impact the integrity of the outer packaging, or there may be a risk to personal safety depending on the dangerous goods enclosed.
