Commodity Specific Requirements - Battery-powered Wheelchairs & Mobility Aids
Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility aids for use by passengers whose mobility is restricted by a disability, health or age, or a temporary mobility problem, may be permitted as checked baggage with operator approval as long as they meet certain criteria. The criteria are based on the type of battery used.
Spillable batteries are permitted as checked baggage with operator approval as long as they are loaded in accordance with DGR 2.3.2.3. These batteries should be fitted with spill-resistant vent caps when feasible.
Lithium ion battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility aids are permitted as checked or carry-on baggage with operator approval as long as they are loaded in accordance with DGR 2.3.2.4.
Wheelchairs and other battery operated mobility devices with non-spillable batteries are permitted for air transport with operator approval if they are loaded in accordance with DGR 2.3.2.2. The battery terminal should be insulated to prevent accidental short circuits. This may be accomplished by enclosing the battery in a battery container.
The pilot-in-command must be notified that the wheelchair, mobility aid, or battery is onboard, along with its location. Passengers should make advance arrangements with the operator whenever possible.
