Key Terms

Before we begin, it may be helpful to review some key terms and concepts related to the DGR.

Dangerous Goods are articles or substances that are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment and that are shown in or classified according to the list of dangerous goods in the IATA DGR.

In the United States, the term hazardous materials, or HAZMAT, is often used in place of dangerous goods. For the purpose of this course, and throughout the DGR, the term dangerous goods will be used.

Shipper refers to a person, organization, or enterprise responsible for performing any pre-transportation functions.

Operator refers to a person, organization, or enterprise engaged in or offering to engage in aircraft operation. Operators oversee flight crew and load planner personnel.

The State of Origin is the country (State) in the territory where the consignment is to be first loaded on an aircraft.

The State of Destination is the country (State) in the territory where the consignment is to be finally unloaded from an aircraft.
