Mixtures & Solutions

A mixture means that the material is composed of more than one chemical compound or element. A solution is any homogenous liquid mixture of two or more chemical compounds or elements that will not undergo any separation under normal conditions of transport.

If a mixture or solution is composed of a predominant substance that is identified in the List of Dangerous Goods, then you use the proper shipping name of the predominant substance with the qualifying word "mixture" or "solution," as appropriate (such as Acetone solution). The exceptions are as follows:

  • If the mixture or solution is identified by name in the List of Dangerous Goods
  • If the substance in the List of Dangerous Goods indicates that it only applies to pure substances
  • If the hazard class, subsidiary hazard, physical state, or packing group of the mixture or solution differs from that of the substance listed in the List of Dangerous Goods
  • If the hazard characteristics and properties of the mixture or solution necessitate different emergency response measures of the substance in the List of Dangerous Goods.

Review DGR 4.1.3.1 for more information on mixture and solution exceptions.
