Radiation Protection Programs

The DGR requires that the transport of radioactive material must be subject to a radiation protection program to provide adequate radiation protection measures. The radiation protection program ensures that any activities involving radioactive materials are performed so that radiation doses to workers are kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). It also ensures that employees are aware of their roles and responsibilities.

Workers must be classified by occupational exposure in order to determine the type of monitoring and workplace practices that need to be in place. Workers must also receive appropriate training on radiation protection, including separation, emergency response, and work procedures.

Detailed written work procedures should be provided. These procedures may include safe handling practices, such as how to efficiently secure radioactive packages from movement while in transit, where and when to load radioactive packages, and actions to take if damage occurs. Work procedures may also include suggestions for limiting exposure.
