Radioactive Material - Competent Authority Certificates

Competent authority refers to the body of authority designated or otherwise recognized as such for any purpose in connection with the DGR. For the United States, the competent authority is the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

The shipper must have a copy of any of the following competent authority certificates relevant to the shipment:

  • Special form approval certificate
  • Low dispersible radioactive material approval certificate
  • Packages containing 0.1 kg or more of uranium hexafluoride approval certificate
  • Type B package design approval certificate
  • Type B(M) package shipment approval certificate
  • Type C package design approval certificate
  • Fissile material package design approval certificate
  • Fissile material package shipment approval certificate
  • Special arrangement approval certificate

The shipper must attach the required certificates to the Shipper's Declaration. Competent authority certificates may have an expiration date, and the freight forwarder and acceptance personnel must check to ensure that the certificate presented is not out-of-date.
