Radioactive Material - Excepted Packages

Very small quantities of radioactive material are permitted in excepted packages. The quantities are small enough that their potential hazards are deemed insignificant. The dose rate in an excepted package cannot exceed 5 µSv/h. A radiation dose at that level would not be significant and it would not damage any sensitive photographic materials.

Excepted packages of radioactive materials are exempt from the provisions relating to the categorization of packages, packing, labeling, marking, and other requirements for other quantities of radioactive material. However, they are required to meet the provisions related to the marking of gross mass, documentation, inspection, and the reporting of dangerous goods accidents, incidents, and occurrences. All excepted packages of radioactive material must have a radioactive material, excepted package label, unless it meets the requirements of Special Provision A130.
