There are several types of packages used for radioactive material including excepted packages, industrial packages, and Type A, Type B(U), Type B(M), and Type C packages. The packaging for the transport of radioactive material must provide for the following:
- Containment: prevent contamination of people and the environment
- Protection from radiation: the type of packaging depends on the amount and type of radiation
- Prevention of criticality
- Protection from internal heat generation
