Salvage Packaging
Salvage packagings are special packaging for damaged, defective, leaking, or non-conforming dangerous goods that need to be transported for recovery or disposal. Salvage packaging must bear the mark "SALVAGE" and require prior approval from the appropriate national authority. The lettering of the "SALVAGE" marking must be at least 12 mm high; this size requirement went into effect on January 1, 2016.
Salvage package requirements are designed to prevent excessive movement of the damaged or leaking packages within the salvage packaging. They must be packed in a single packaging composed of a material resistant to any chemical or other reaction of the leaking or spilled dangerous goods. Salvage packages cannot be used with dangerous goods in Classes 1, 2, 7, and Division 6.2, with the exception of medical and clinical waste that falls under UN 3291.
