Using the List of Dangerous Goods

The List of Dangerous Goods consists of 14 columns, labeled A through N. The information contained in each column is described as follows:

Column A - UN or ID Number contains the serial number assigned to each article or substance under the UN classification system. If the article or substance has not been assigned a number yet, a temporary ID number in the 8000 range is used. You must include the prefix "UN" or "ID" before the number whenever you use it (such as UN 1950, ID 8000).

Column B - Proper Shipping Name/Description displays the alphabetical listing of dangerous goods and articles by proper shipping name in bold text, followed by a qualifying description.

Column C - Class or Division (and Subsidiary hazard) contains the class or division number of the dangerous good. For Class 1 Explosives, the compatibility group is also shown. When an item has a subsidiary hazard, the class of the subsidiary hazard or hazards is shown in parentheses, listed in numerical order.

Column D - Labels lists the hazard label or labels that must be applied to the outside of each package and overpack. The primary label is listed first, followed by any subsidiary hazard labels and other necessary labels, such as a Cargo Aircraft Only label.

Column E - Packing Group (PG) provides the UN Packing Group number assigned to the article or substance.

Column F - Excepted Quantity Code (EQ) shows the excepted quantity code assigned to the article or substance by packing group, labeled E0 through E5.

Columns G and H - Passenger and Cargo Aircraft Limited Quantity provide the relevant limited quantity packing instruction identification number (Column G) and the maximum net quantity, in (weight or volume), of the article or substance allowed in each package (Column H). Limited quantity packing instruction numbers begin with the letter "Y" followed by the numerical sequence. The word "Forbidden" means that the article or substance cannot be carried under Limited Quantity provisions.

Column I - Passenger and Cargo Aircraft - Packing Instructions (Pkg Inst) lists the packing instruction number for the article or substance when transported on passenger or cargo aircraft. The packing instructions can be found in DGR Section 5 - Packing.

Column J - Passenger and Cargo Aircraft - Maximum Net Quantity per Package (Max Net Qty/Pkg) shows the maximum net quantity (weight or volume) of the article or substance allowed in each package on a passenger or cargo aircraft. These quantities may be further limited by the type of packaging used.

Column K - Cargo Aircraft Only - Packing Instructions (Pkg Inst) provides the relevant packing instruction number for the transport of articles or substances on cargo aircraft only.

Column L - Cargo Aircraft Only - Maximum Net Quantity per Package (Max Net Qty/Pkg) shows the maximum net quantity (weight or volume) of the article or substance allowed in each package on a cargo aircraft only. These quantities may be further limited by the type of packaging used.

Column M - Special Provisions (S.P.) lists an alphanumeric indicator that relates to the appropriate special provisions described in DGR 4.4.

Column N - Emergency Response Drill Code (ERG Code) lists the relevant code as found in the ICAO document Emergency Response Guidance for Aircraft Incidents Involving Dangerous Goods (ICAO Doc. 9481-AN/928). The ERG provides a suggested response to an incident involving the specific dangerous good listed. Many operators include ERG Codes on the Notification to Captain to assist the pilot-in-command in the event of an in-flight emergency involving dangerous goods.
