HAZMAT Class 2 Gases - Divisions & Packing
Class 2 dangerous goods are divided into one of three categories based on their primary hazard.
Division 2.1 is for flammable gases. These gases can ignite when mixed with a certain volume of air (13% or less) or have a flammable range with air, which is determined by tests and calculations.
Division 2.2 is for non-flammable and non-toxic gases. These gases may be asphyxiation or oxidizing hazards.
Division 2.3 is for toxic gases. These gases are known, or presumed, to be toxic or corrosive to people and cause health hazards. They have an LC50 value equal to or less than 5,000 mL/m3 (ppm).
Packing
Cylinders and closed cryogenic receptacles must be constructed and closed to prevent any loss of contents, which might be caused by normal conditions of transport, such as vibration or changes in temperature, humidity, or pressure. The packaging for Class 2 dangerous goods must meet the specifications in the packing instructions as well as conform to ISO 11114-1:2012 and ISO 11114-2:2000.
Refillable cylinders and closed cryogenic receptacles must be marked with permanently affixed certification, operational, and manufacturing marks. The marks must be placed on the shoulder, top end, or neck of the cylinder or closed cryogenic receptacle, or on a permanently affixed component.
