HAZMAT Class 2 Gases - Primary Hazards

Gases are capable of posing serious hazards due to their flammability, their potential as asphyxiants, their ability to oxidize, and their toxicity or corrosiveness. Gases may have the following potential hazards:

• Easily ignited by heat, sparks, or flame.
• Form explosive mixtures with air.
• React violently when mixed with water.
• Vapors may travel to source of ignition and then flash back.
• Cylinders exposed to fire may vent and release flammable gas through pressure-relief devices.
• Containers may explode when heated.
• Ruptured cylinders may rocket.
• Vapors from liquefied gases are initially heavier than air and may spread along the ground.
• Vapors may cause dizziness or asphyxiation without warning.
• Some gases may be irritating or fatal if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
• Contact with some gases and liquefied gases may cause burns, severe injury, or frostbite.
• Fire may produce irritating, corrosive, or toxic gases.
