HAZMAT Class 5 Oxidizing Substances & Organic Peroxides
Class 5 dangerous goods are subdivided into two divisions:
- Division 5.1 - Oxidizing Substances
- Division 5.2 - Organic Peroxides
Oxidizing substances are substances that are not necessarily combustible but can yield oxygen that can cause or contribute to the combustion of other material. These substances may be part of an article, and they may take a solid or liquid form.
Organic peroxides are thermally unstable substances which may undergo exothermic, self-accelerating decomposition.
Primary Hazards
Class 5 substances may present fire or explosion hazards due to the following risks:
- Will accelerate burning when involved in a fire
- May decompose explosively when heated or involved in a fire
- May explode from heat or contamination
- May react explosively with hydrocarbons (fuels)
- May ignite combustibles
- May produce irritating, toxic, or corrosive gases when involved in a fire
