HAZMAT Class 7 Radioactive Material - Packing

There are seven different types of packages for radioactive materials covered by these Regulations:

  • Excepted packages
  • Industrial package Type 1
  • Industrial package Type 2
  • Industrial package Type 3
  • Type A packages
  • Type B(U) and B(M) packages
  • Type C packages

There are additional requirements for packages containing fissile material or uranium hexafluoride. These packing requirements vary based on the particular radionuclide involved, the quantity of material, and whether the material is Special Form or fissile.

Packages and packaging must be designed and tested to retain the integrity of containment and shielding during transport. The packages must meet the following general requirements:

  • Designed to be properly secured during transport.
  • Designed to be easily handled and transported.
  • Sturdy and secure lifting attachments that are removable or otherwise rendered incapable during transport.
  • External surfaces can be easily decontaminated and are free from protrusions.
  • External surface designed to prevent collection of water.
  • Designed to be capable of withstanding the effects of acceleration, vibration, pressure, and temperature changes during normal conditions of transport.
  • Materials of construction, components, and structures are physically and chemically compatible.
  • Valves are protected against unauthorized operation.
