HAZMAT Class 7 Radioactive Material
Radioactive material is defined any material containing radionuclides where both the activity concentration and the total activity in the consignment exceed the values specified in Subsection 10.3.2.
Hazards
Radioactive contamination can lead to the impairment or destruction of certain body tissues, cancer, hair loss, radiation sickness, radiation burns, and death. Protection from radiation is achieved by containing radioactive contents, controlling external radioactive levels, preventing criticality, and preventing damage by heat.
Classification
Radioactive materials are grouped into six categories based on their form or characteristics. These categories include:
- Special Form
- Low Specific Activity (LSA)
- Surface Contaminated Object (SCO)
- Fissile
- Low dispersible radioactive material
- Other form
Radioactive material must be assigned a proper shipping name and UN number, as listed in Table 10.4.A.
