Corrosives are substances, which by chemical action, can cause severe damage when in contact with living tissue or, in the case of leakage, will materially damage or destroy other goods or the means of transport.

The primary hazards for Class 8 substances include the following:

- Contact may burn skin and eyes.
- Fire may produce irritating or toxic gases.
- Liquid vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation.
