Subsection 4.1-4.2 - Identifying the Proper Shipping Name

Items Listed by Name

If you know the name of the article or substance, you can go directly to the Subsection 4.2 - List of Dangerous Goods. If you do not know the name, but you know the UN or ID number, you can go to Subsection 4.3 Numerical Cross-Reference Index to find the proper shipping name and the relevant page number to the item in the List of Dangerous Goods.

Items Not Listed by Name

For articles or substances not listed by name, the shipper must first determine that the article or substance is not forbidden (refer to the characteristics listed in Subsection 2.1 and the classification criteria described in Section 3). The shipper must then classify it by comparing its properties with the classification criteria described in Section 3.

Not Restricted

Some articles or substances contain chemicals that might be considered dangerous but are not listed in Subsection 4.2 - List of Dangerous Goods. If these articles or substances do not meet the criteria for any hazard class or division, they can be offered for transport as not restricted.

Critical Note

If you have any doubt about whether a non-listed article or substance is permitted for transport, you must consult with the appropriate national authority. You can contact the IATA dangerous goods support line, +1 (514) 390-6770, or email them at dangood@iata.org for more information.
