Subsection 5.0.1 - Shipper's Responsibilities

The shipper is responsible for all aspects of the packing of dangerous goods. When preparing a dangerous goods package for transport, the shipper must:

  • Comply with the packing requirements appropriate to the type of package used.
  • Use only the packagings permitted by the applicable packing instructions specified in columns G, I, and K of the List of Dangerous Goods.
  • Restrict the overall quantity per package to the limits specified in Columns H, J, or L of the List of Dangerous Goods, or to the design limits of the package, whichever is more restrictive.
  • Assemble and secure all components of the package.
  • Ensure that the external surfaces of the package are free from contamination.
  • Ensure that all shipper responsibilities are completely fulfilled when the package is presented to the operator for shipment.

The shipper must also meet all requirements for freight container and unit load device use. See Paragraph 5.0.1.3 for more information.
