Subsection 5.0.2 - General Packing Requirements

Outer Packaging General Requirements

Different dangerous goods can be packed into one outer packaging provided they meet the following requirements:

  • The dangerous goods do not react dangerously to each other.
  • The dangerous goods do not require segregation, as outlined in Table 9.3.A.
  • The outer packagings used are allowed by all applicable packing instructions for the dangerous goods contained therein.
  • The prepared package meets the specification performance tests for the most restrictive packing group of a dangerous goods item in the package.
  • The quantities of dangerous goods in the outer package do not exceed the maximum net quantity as calculated using the Q value formula.

See 5.0.2.11 for detailed instructions on using this formula.

Inner Packaging General Requirements

Inner packagings must be secured or cushioned in an outer packaging so that under normal transport conditions they cannot break, be punctured, or leak contents into the outer packaging.

If an inner packaging contains liquids, it must be packaged so that the closure is oriented upward and in-line with the orientation labels.
