Subsection 6.3 - UN Packaging Performance Tests
Each type of packaging design must successfully pass a test, as specified in Subsection 6.3, before it can be used. The design includes the size, material, thickness, manner of construction and packing, and any surface treatments used. Tests must be conducted as specified by the appropriate national authority and when any modification to the design is made. The types of tests are described as follows:
- Drop test: A test sample must be able to withstand and protect the contents of the packaging against collisions. A drop test is conducted by allowing the packaging to freefall onto corners, edges, and flat surfaces from a drop height specified in Subsection 6.3.3.
- Leak-proof test: A leak-proof test must be performed on all types of packagings that are intended to contain liquids. There must be three test samples per design, and there can be no leakage.
- Internal pressure (hydraulic) test: Internal pressure tests must be carried out for all design types made of metal, plastic, and composite packagings that are intended to contain liquids. There must be three test samples per design, and there can be no leakage.
- Stacking test: All packaging design types, except for bags, must undergo a stacking test. In a stacking test, a load must be placed on top of the package, representing the weight of identical packages, which might be stacked on top of it during transport.
