Applicable Regulations - Shipping
ICAO and IATA regulations limit the SoC to 30 percent for lithium ion cells and batteries on cargo aircraft. This regulation applies to the shipment of cells and batteries but not if they are packed with or contained in equipment.
ICAO and IATA Air Regulations require cells and batteries contained in equipment to follow packing instructions outlined in the most current edition of the ICAO Technical Instruction for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air, the 58th Edition of the IATA DGR, and in the IATA Lithium Battery Shipping Guidelines. When an overpack is used, the package marks and labels must be duplicated on the overpack unless the marks and labels required on individual packages are visible, or are not required by the packing instruction.
As an example, labels are not required on packages in situations, as follows:
- When there are no more than four cells contained in equipment
- When there are no more than two batteries contained in equipment
- When there are no more than two packages in the shipment
When the package is placed in an overpack, the Lithium Battery Handling Label must be clearly visible or the label must be on the outside of the overpack. The overpack must be marked with the word overpack. The quantity limits described in the packing instructions refer to the individual package. Provided each package remains under the limit specified in the packing instruction, the overpack may exceed the specified limits.
