Cargo Acceptance & Handling
To ensure the safe transport of lithium batteries by air it is important to follow several protocols during various stages, as follows:
- Acceptance
- Loading
- Operator Approval
- General Cargo Handling
Acceptance
Employees must conduct an acceptance check to verify as far as possible that all the requirements for packages have been met, including the ICAO and IATA measures for dangerous goods.
For example, packages must meet regulations, as follows:
- Be secured in an aircraft in a manner that will prevent movement
- Be protected against damage:
- During flight, for example by the movement of baggage, mail, stores, or other cargo
- During their preparation for transport, for example during handling after acceptance and prior to loading
An acceptance check is only required when fully regulated dangerous goods are first accepted for carriage by air. But, when packages are transshipped, operators should verify that markings and labels are still intact. Labels must be replaced by the operator if they have become lost, detached, or illegible. Packages must be free from damage.
