Controls - Incident Occurrence
Establishing procedural controls ensures that workers are consistently following safe practices when transporting lithium batteries. Posting information about the procedures involved when managing these processes keeps the worker informed about ways to reduce associated risks.
In the event that the situation develops into a lithium battery fire, cabin crew should apply the following procedural controls:
- Lithium battery fire-fighting procedures
- Post-event on-board procedures
- First point of landing offloading procedures
After landing, the crew must advise ground staff where the device is stowed and make an appropriate entry in the technical log. The PED responsible for the fire must be removed from the aircraft since damaged lithium batteries cannot be transported by aircraft. Devices involved in a fire should be kept on the ground to aid investigators following an incident.
Other controls for incident occurrence include the use of labels, along with proper information and training.
- Labels: A completed package must display a Class 9 hazard label in addition to markings that identify the proper shipping name and UN number. The border of the label must have red diagonal hatchings with text and symbols in black on a contrasting background. It cannot be applied so that it appears on different faces of the outer package. It may be printed directly on the outer packaging provided that there is sufficient contrast between the elements of the lithium battery label and the color of the packaging material.
- Information and training: To facilitate understanding of safe practices, including fire safety, workers must be trained to follow specific protocols for lithium battery transport.
