Procedures for Fire Event
If a fire or overheat event occurs on-board an aircraft, first identify the source of the fire. If fire or smoke is seen coming from a baggage compartment, passengers should be moved and asked if they are carrying anything that could be the cause. The exact location of the fire should be determined by checking for heat with the back of an ungloved hand.
Once the source of the fire is identified, steps should be taken to contain the situation, as follows:
- Don PPE and discharge a fire extinguisher into the area.
- If the area is containable, such as an overhead locker, the locker should be closed for several seconds.
- Remove the source of power.
- Turn off the in-seat power to the remaining electrical outlets.
- Visually check that power to the remaining electrical outlets remains off until the aircraft's system can be determined to be free of faults.
- If the PED is not in a bag or it is an a bag which is not intact it should not be moved but cooled by flooding it with water or other non-flammable liquid to prevent the spread of heat to other cells in the battery. If a PED is contained in an intact bag and no flames can be seen, the bag should be removed and placed in a watertight container and flooded with water.
- Leave the device in its place and monitor for any re-ignition.
- The device can be moved with caution once it has cooled.
