Communication

The goal of the Polar Code regulation regarding communication is to ensure effective communication for ships and survival craft during both normal and emergency situations. There are multiple types of communications equipment, each with their advantages and disadvantages.

VHF communications are used at sea, but they are only used reliably for short distances and only for voice communication. HF and MF communications are used for emergency purposes. Several types of communications are only available when in sight of shore-based stations, such as mobile phones, wireless technology, and digital VHF. These are not generally available in polar waters. Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellite signals become unreliable around 70 degrees north or south of the equator.
