Employer & Employee Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the employer to abide by the requirements and regulations set out by the Polar Code. This includes responsible voyage planning, ship maintenance, providing adequate necessary supplies and systems, having emergency preparedness items, providing proper training, and preparing crew members.
Employees also have responsibilities. First and foremost, you are responsible for understanding the requirements set out by the Polar Code. This allows you to have a "safety first" mentality. In understanding these requirements, you are able to foresee and respond to situations and events more knowledgeably. You should know what items are available to you for your safety, and for the safety of everyone on board.
