Escape
In order to provide a safe means of escape in the event of an emergency, the Polar Code provides for the following requirements:
- Escape routes that are exposed to the elements must remain accessible and safe, snow accumulation and potential icing must be taken into consideration.
- A plan for safe abandonment of the ship must be made, taking into consideration the potential unfavorable environmental conditions during an emergency.
So that these conditions be met, it is necessary that the following occur:
- When a ship is exposed to ice accretion, a way to remove or prevent buildup from escape routes, muster stations, embarkation areas, survival craft, survival craft launching appliances, and access to survival craft must be provided.
- Any ship built after January 1, 2017, must have all exposed escape routes arranged in such a way that passage by a person wearing the appropriate polar clothing is not obstructed.
- When a ship is intending to operate in low air temperatures, the procedures for embarkation need to reflect the added difficulty incurred by wearing additional clothing for polar regions.
