Garbage in the Antarctic

When operating in the Antarctic, discharge of garbage into the sea must meet the requirements of regulation 6 of SOLAS Annex V, and also must meet the following requirements:

  • Discharges allowed must be made as far as possible from areas with an ice concentration exceeding 1/10.
  • Discharges must be made at a minimum of 12 nautical miles from the nearest fast ice.
  • Food wastes are prohibited from being discharged onto ice.
