Class 1 Compatibility Groups & Classification Codes
As stated in the notes section at the beginning of the chapter, Class 1 goods are unique because the type of packaging used frequently has a significant impact on the hazard presented by a substance or article during transport. In Section 2.1.2, it is stated that Class 1 goods are deemed to be compatible if by being transported together the likelihood or magnitude of an accident is not increased. A list of 13 compatibility groups has been developed on this basis. These groups are designated by an upper-case letter, as shown in the table at Subsection 2.1.2.2. On the basis of testing, the substance or article is classified into one of five hazard divisions designated by the numbers 1.1 through 1.6. To complete the classification, the compatibility group letter is appended to the hazard division number.
