Consignment Procedures
On January 1, 2016, special marking requirements began for overpacks. Overpacks are enclosures used by a consignor to contain packages for more convenient handling and stowage during transport. These new requirements are noted at 5.1.2.1. General provisions are given for empty, uncleaned packagings or units under Section 5.1.3. These must be treated as though they continue to contain the dangerous good previously transported. Section 5.1.4 states that when two or more dangerous goods are packed in the same outer packaging, the package must be labeled and marked as required for each substance present. Section 5.1.5 details requirements for the consigning of Class 7 radioactive materials. In some cases, it is necessary to notify competent authorities of Class 7 shipments. Finally, each package containing dangerous goods packed into a cargo transport unit must carry its own marks, at least 12 mm high, and labels, regardless of the markings on the outside of the cargo transport unit.
