Overview of the List of Packing Instructions

The first List of Packing Instructions begins under Section 4.1.4. A Packing Instruction is a concise summary of a method for the proper packaging of dangerous goods. Rather than provide the full set of packing instructions under each dangerous good listed in the DGL, the IMDG Code refers the user looking up a particular dangerous good back to these instructions. Packing Instructions are sequentially numbered. Most of the numbers carry the prefix "P" (for example, P402). Packing Instructions with a P are for packagings other than IBCs and large packagings. If special packing provisions are provided for the P-type packing instruction, it will be designated with "PP" (for example, PP26). Other designations and their special provision designations include the following:

  • IBC - for IBC packagings (special provision designated with B)
  • LP - for large packagings (special provision designated with L)
