Placarding of Cargo Transport Units & Bulk Containers

The next Chapter 5.3 Placarding and Marking of Cargo Transport Units and Bulk Containers, provides required guidelines for the affixing of enlarged labels, known as "placards," marks, and signs to the exterior surface of cargo transport units and bulk containers. Such exterior marking is required unless the labels and markings on packages carried by the unit are clearly visible, but they must be removed or masked as soon as both the dangerous goods and their residues are no longer being carried. As with package marking and labeling, placarding cargo transport units and bulk containers identifies the presence of the dangerous good in the case of emergency. A freight container or portable tank must display one placard on each side and each end of the unit. Radioactive materials (Class 7) require special placarding. All placards must be at least 25 centimeters square.
