Provisions for Intermediate Bulk Containers

The fifth section in Part 6, Chapter 6.5 - Provisions for the construction and testing of intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), outlines provisions for IBCs. As with other packaging categories, IBCs acceptable for carrying dangerous goods must be marked with a specific set of designations, numbers, and details. These are spelled out, with examples, under Section 6.5.2. In addition to the information required on all types of packaging, the IBC marking adds a third line, that shows the stacking test load in kilograms and the maximum permissible gross mass, which is also in kilograms (for example: 5500/1500). An additional symbol is added to the IBC indicating the maximum stacking load for those IBCs that can be stacked; a different symbol is used to indicate that the IBC cannot be stacked.
