Provisions for Large Packagings

The sixth chapter in Part 6, 6.6 - Provisions for the construction and testing of large packagings, covers packagings that consist of an outer packaging containing articles or inner packagings. The provisions in this chapter, with some minor exceptions, do not apply to packagings for Class 2, Class 6.2, or Class 7.

Two types of large packagings are designated by the codes 50 and 51: rigid large packagings and flexible large packagings. Primary markings for large packagings are similar to those of other types of packages. The UN symbol is followed by the code 50 or 51, the packing group designation (X, Y, or Z), and the month and year of manufacture. Also included are: the state authorizing the mark, the manufacturer, the stacking test load in kilograms, and the maximum permissible gross mass, also in kilograms. Markings must be at least 12mm high. Specific provisions for each type of large packaging are given, along with the methods and criteria for each type of test applied to large packagings. Tests include the bottom lift test, the stacking test, and the drop test. As with other packaging categories, a test report must be drawn up and made available to user of the IBC.
