Special Packing Provisions for Goods of Various Classes

In addition to meeting the general provisions for packagings given under 4.1.1, various special packing provisions are provided for Class 1 - Explosives, Class 2 - Gases, and divisions 4.1 and 5.2, self-reactive substances and organic peroxides, respectively. These provisions reflect the additional hazards presented by these classes. We will briefly review these provisions here; consult the sections beginning at 4.1.5 for more information. The first of the special packing provisions sections pertains to specific methods of packing explosives (Class 1) to ensure deterrence of unintentional ignition under normal conditions of transport, safe handling of the package under normal conditions, and prevention of crushing and distortion when stacked. For gases (Class 2), the special packing provisions are focused on the use of pressure receptacles for transport. The special packing provisions for self-reactive substances and organic peroxides (Divisions 4.1 and 5.2), provide details for various aspects of the packaging, transport, and emergency response related to these dangerous goods.
