Transport of Samples & Wastes

On occasion, it is necessary to transport a substance with an unknown hazard class for further testing. In these cases, a tentative hazard class, proper shipping name and identification number are assigned on the basis of the consignor's knowledge of the substance. The most severe packing group for the sample's proper shipping name must be used, and certain other rules must be adhered to as well. The transport of wastes is similarly regulated. Wastes are defined as substances, solutions, mixtures, or articles contaminated with one or more components of dangerous goods. These are transported for purposes of disposal, not for further use. Special conventions regulate the transport of wastes across international boundaries; these must be addressed by shippers. Various rules apply to the classification of wastes. If the waste contains only one substance from the DGL, it is subject to the same rules as the unspent substance. If the waste contains more than one substance from the DGL, is radioactive, or is environmentally hazardous, additional rules and criteria must be met.
