Use of Portable Tanks and Multiple-Element Gas Containers

The next section in Part 4 is Chapter 4.2, Use of Portable Tanks and Multiple-Element Gas Containers. Section 4.2.0, discusses transitional provisions arising from changes in the United Nations recommendations regarding the use and construction of portable tanks. Subsequent sections, beginning with 4.2.1, provide general provisions for the use of portable tanks for the transport of substances in class 1 and classes 3 to 9. These provisions emphasize the importance of safety in managing tanks, substances, and conditions during transport. Tanks must be filled to a level that takes into account the potential for changes in cubic mass of the substance under a range of temperature conditions. It is important to note that portable tanks are not to be filled or emptied while they are on board the vessel.

Sections 4.2.2 through 4.2.4 provide similar provisions for the use of portable tanks for the transport of non-refrigerated liquefied gases and chemicals under pressure (4.2.2) and refrigerated liquefied gases of Class 2 (4.2.3). Section 4.2.4 focuses on the use of multiple-element gas containers, or MEGCs. These are groupings of interconnected cylinders, tubes, or bundled cylinders assembled within a framework and transported as a unit. MEGCs include service equipment and structural equipment necessary for the transport of gases. Similar to the previous general provisions sections in this chapter, Section 4.2.4 discusses the testing, safe handling, and filling of MEGCs. , outlining regulations such as not filling or transporting MEGCs unless the required certification, retest, and filling marks are legible, under 4.2.4.5.6.
