Oil Related Structural Requirements - Category A & Category B Ships

For Category A and Category B ships constructed after January 1, 2017, an additional set of requirements apply. These are outlined below.

  • If the vessel has an aggregate oil fuel capacity less than 600 m3, the fuel tanks must be separated from the outer shell by a minimum of .76 m. (This does not apply to ships that have a maximum capacity of 30 m3 or less.)
  • Oil tankers weighing less than 5,000 tonnes in deadweight must be protected with double bottom tanks or spaces and wing tanks or spaces running the entire length of the cargo tank.
  • All oil residue (sludge) tanks and oily bilge water holding tanks must be separated from the outer shell by a minimum of .76 m. (This does not apply to ships that have a maximum capacity of 30 m3 or less.)
