Procedures to Maintain Equipment and System Functionality

Chapter 5 of Ship Operations should be procedurally focused. This chapter is broken into three subchapters:

  • Icing prevention and de-icing
  • Operation of seawater systems
  • Procedures for low temperature operations

Icing prevention and de-icing

Icing presents a specific danger to systems. It is important to create a procedure for mitigating icing hazards. In development of a procedure, one must take into account the following:

  • How to monitor ice accretion
  • How to assess ice accretion
  • How to conduct de-icing
  • How to use the equipment on the ship to efficiently de-ice
  • How to maintain the safety of the ship while de-icing
  • How to maintain the safety of the crew while de-icing

Operation of seawater systems

Seawater systems need to be protected from ice ingestion to be able to operate properly and efficiently. The PWOM must provide the necessary guidance for monitoring, preventing, or mitigating ice ingestion.

Procedures for low temperature operations

The PWOM must provide guidance for monitoring and maintaining any system or piece of equipment that is required for the vessel to be kept active in order to ensure functionality.
