Ship Categories
Ships are broken down into three categories: Category A, Category B, and Category C ships. The distinctions among these ships are based on design.
A Category A ship has been designed for operation in polar waters in at least medium first-year ice and waters that may also include old ice inclusions.
A Category B ship has been designed for operation in polar waters but is not categorized as a Category A ship as it is designed to operate in at least thin first-year ice that may also include old ice inclusions.
A Category C ship has been designed to operate in open water or in ice conditions that are not as severe as those included in Category A or Category B.
