Survival Regulations
In 2017, a study was published entitled Maritime Operations and Emergency Preparedness in the Arctic-Competence Standards for Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations Contingencies in Polar Waters. It concluded that any mass rescue effort would put a large strain on the emergency preparedness systems of the Arctic countries. This study highlights the necessity of operational knowledge by crew members, as well as the need for cooperation among the crew members of the vessel in distress, joint rescue coordination centers, Coast Guard, private organizations, other vessels involved in the effort, police, stakeholders, and ship owners.
In order to address some of these concerns, the Polar Code outlined regulations on survival, escape, and evacuation.
