Class 1 - Definitions

Compatibility Group refers to the letter of the alphabet that is used to categorize class 1 explosives. They are A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, N, and S.

Explode is the verb used to indicate those explosive effects capable of endangering life and property through blast, heat, and projectiles. It encompasses both deflagration and detonation.

Deflagration occurs when something burns rapidly with intense heat by combustion.

Detonation is a supersonic explosion that propagates through shock.

Pyrophoric articles are capable of spontaneous ignition when exposed to air.

Pyrotechnic articles and substances are those used for technical purposes such as heat generation, gas generation, and theatrical effects (light, sound, smoke).

The following terminology includes some generic terms for types of explosives:

Ammunition is a generic term for bombs, grenades, rockets, mines, projectiles, and other similar devices. Most ammunition is military grade and not permitted on civilian passenger and cargo aircraft.

Gun powder, or black powder, is a substance consisting of a mixture of charcoal or other carbon substance and either potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate, with or without sulfur. It may be meal, granular, compressed, or in pellet form, and it may be readily ignited by a spark.

Cartridge is a generic term for any explosive article designed to deliver combustion gases under pressure. In particular, it applies to assembled ammunition consisting of a case fitted with a primer and filled with propellant powder.
