Class 5
Class 5 dangerous goods are subdivided into two divisions:
- Division 5.1 - Oxidizing substances
- Division 5.2 - Organic peroxides
Each division has different properties; therefore, tests and criteria for classification are different for each division.
Class 5 substances may present fire or explosion hazards due to the following risks:
- Will accelerate burning when involved in a fire
- May decompose explosively when heated or involved in a fire
- May explode from heat or contamination
- May react explosively with hydrocarbons (fuels)
- May ignite combustibles
- May produce irritating, toxic, or corrosive gases when involved in a fire
In addition, contact with these substances may also cause severe burns to skin and eyes, and inhalation or ingestion of these substances may be toxic.
