Class 6 - Division 6.2 Exceptions - Patient Specimens

Patient specimens with a minimal likelihood of containing pathogens are exempt from Division 6.2 classification if they meet the following packaging specifications:

  • The patient specimen must be packaged so that it is leakproof.
  • The package must be marked with the words, "Exempt human specimen" or "Exempt animal specimen," as appropriate.
  • The packaging must have a leak-proof primary receptacle, a leak-proof secondary packaging, and an outer packaging of adequate strength with at least one surface having minimum dimensions of 100 mm x 100 mm.
  • Absorbent material must be used between the primary receptacle and secondary packaging if liquids are involved, so that in the event of a leak, the substance will not reach the outer packaging.
  • If multiple fragile primary receptacles are placed in a single secondary packaging, they must be individually wrapped or separated to prevent contact.
